4 ways to save money upgrading a UPS
There are many reasons that you might decide to replace or upgrade your old UPS system. Depending on what type of UPS you are replacing and what you decide to replace it with, the process of upgrading can represent a significant amount of capital expenditure.
Below are 4 simple ways that you can reduce the cap-ex and op-ex cost of buying a new uninterruptible power supply.
1. A new UPS system will reduce operating costs
With an emphasis for most companies to reduce power consumption and CO2 emissions, modern uninterruptible power supplies have become far more efficient than older UPS systems. With efficiencies from new UPS systems as high as 97% , replacing an old UPS with a new one will improve efficiency, lower emissions and reduce utility bills. Improving the efficiency of a 100kVA UPS by just 5% can reduce the utility cost of running that UPS by as much as £5000.00 per annum.
2. Cap-Ex tax relief for a new Uninterruptible Power Supply
Several years ago, in an effort to promote “Greener” electronic devices, the government introduced the Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA) scheme. This scheme gives companies 100% tax relief on the most energy efficient equipment if it is listed on the ECA Technology List. So if your business pays corporation or income tax at 20%, every £10,000 spent on a new UPS from the ECA technology list would reduce its tax bill in the year of purchase by £2,000.
3. Longer warranty periods help reduce maintenance costs
As technology has improved UPS systems have become more reliable. This has led to several manufacturers extending the standard warranty period from 12 months up to 2 or in some cases 3 years. With longer warranty periods meaning you no longer have to worry about the cost of repairs for the first 3 years of the UPS life, significant savings can be made in annual maintenance costs. For example, an annual maintenance contract that costs around £3500.00 per annum for an old UPS could be reduced to as little as £1000.00 per annum on a new UPS system.
4. Trade in your old UPS for extra discount on a new one!
Some UPS manufacturers will offer additional discounts of up to 5% for customers that trade in their old UPS when buying a new one. Your old UPS system doesn’t even have to be in working order and it doesn’t matter how old it is. If you have an old UPS you can use it to lower the cost of the new equipment.
We have worked with Source UPS for several years now. We have a large number of rack locations throughout our busy campus, but the service visits are always carried out with out any problems. The team are very accommodating and have made some useful recommendations that we have adopted across our campus network. I would definitely recommend Source UPS.
