Managing and Monitoring your UPS
When it comes to managing, monitoring and controlling your Uninterruptible Power Supply an SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocal) interface card is a useful addition.
Most UPS systems now have the facility to add an SNMP card and the cost is usually relatively minor for the additional control and features that it adds to your backup power system.
The SNMP card provides a network or web interface that allows the user to monitor and manage the UPS system over any computer attached to the network or a web browser and can be configured to send alarms and alerts about the UPS status via SNMP, email and sometimes SMS.
Amongst the many alarm conditions that are monitored by your uninterruptible power supply, the SNMP card will alert the user when there is a mains power failure, when the power is restored and if the UPS batteries are low so the user can take steps to manage the situation. An SNMP card will also alert the user of any major faults and failures that may occur within the UPS itself so an engineer can be called out to investigate and rectify the problem before it causes downtime, and can even be configured to instruct an automated shutdown.
SNMP cards are a valuable tool, especially for IT and facilities managers that are responsible for UPS systems on multiple sites or sites with no dedicated IT or facilities support staff. They use the existing network cabling so are quick and easy to install and configure.
