What is Edge Computing?
Edge computing is becoming increasingly popular due to advancements in technology, such as 5G, IoT, and AI. As the need for real-time processing and analytics increases, corporate and consumer networks require new types of capacity to be deployed closer to end users (at the Edge of the network).
Decentralising data processing and analysis, bringing computation closer to the source of data generation, minimises latency and reduces the burden on central data centres. This results in faster decision-making, improved real-time analytics, and more efficient resource utilisation.
Edge computing offers various benefits, including improved performance and user experience. By placing edge data centre sites near end users, latency and response times are reduced, leading to enhanced productivity, customer satisfaction and competitiveness.
However, edge computing comes with its own set of challenges, particularly when it comes to making the right choices for the physical infrastructure of the edge data centre.
One of the primary concerns with edge data centre deployments is the need to maintain and manage a large number of geographically dispersed sites, which can be both time-consuming and resource-intensive. Additionally, edge sites often have limited physical security, making them more susceptible to breaches and vandalism, which could lead to costly downtime and data loss.
As the adoption of edge computing continues to grow, enterprises face the challenge of making the right infrastructure choices for their deployments. The remote nature of many edge sites also necessitates additional support and protection, which can pose logistical challenges and add complexity to the deployment process.
A combination of hardware and software solutions allow network administrators to take a holistic approach to edge data centre and infrastructure management.
Source UPS have a wide range of products including ruggedised, secure server and network racks, remotely monitored power distribution units, UPS and environmental monitoring solutions that can be managed centrally via IT Infrastructure management software, providing IT and Network managers with real time data and alerts for complete control of the entire physical infrastructure from the data centre to the edge.

We have worked with Source UPS for several years now. We have a large number of rack locations throughout our busy campus, but the service visits are always carried out with out any problems. The team are very accommodating and have made some useful recommendations that we have adopted across our campus network. I would definitely recommend Source UPS.
