DCIM Software, what’s it all about?
Data Centre Infrastructure Management involves the integration of both facilities management and information technology within a business or organisation into one application.
Designed to bring together stand-alone functions such as data centre design, asset discovery and management, capacity planning, and energy management, the aim of it is to understand and reduce energy consumption.
DCIM – as it is known for short – provides facilities and IT managers with real-time monitoring and management of all their infrastructure and physical assets ranging from rack or cabinet level to the cooling infrastructure to energy utilisation in one integrated ‘single pane’ view. By providing them with the capability to locate, visualise and manage all of these assets, it allows managers to make faster and more informed decisions about the data centre’s critical systems.
By having one single operational platform and management tool, Data Centre Infrastructure Management can deliver a range of business and operational benefits, including increasing operational efficiency and reducing energy costs. This means managers can accurately forecast, make short term and long term plans from the DCIM’s real-time metrics, which helps them to identify energy and resource waste and reduce energy consumption. It will also reduce a business or organisation’s carbon footprint and keep capital and operational costs down.
Introduced to the data centre market around five years ago, Data Centre Infrastructure Management technology has grown in popularity due to the greater flexibility and manageability it offers business and organisations. DCIM enables data centres to be managed more effectively and efficiently. It also means that potential power problems can be solved on a day-to-day basis and prevented from happening again.
Due to more visibility into the data centre, Data Centre Infrastructure Management also helps prepare a business or organisation if it is planning to expand or consolidate its IT initiatives in future. Earlier this year, leading information technology research and advisory company, Gartner, reported that the DCIM market will grow from its current value of £275million to over £1billion by 2016.

The team at Source have been a pleasure to work with.
